Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between FIR and NC in a police station?
An FIR (First Information Report) is filed for cognizable offences where police can arrest without a warrant. An NC (Non-Cognizable Report) is for minor/non-cognizable offences where police need a magistrate's order before investigating. Both create a legal paper trail.
Can police refuse to file my FIR?
No. Under Section 154 of CrPC, police cannot refuse to register an FIR for cognizable offences. If they refuse, you can approach the Superintendent of Police (SP) or file a complaint with the Judicial Magistrate under Section 156(3) CrPC.
What should I do if I am in immediate danger?
Call 112 (Unified Emergency Response) or 100 (Police) immediately. Do not search the directory in an active emergency — these numbers connect to the nearest available help.
How do I report a cybercrime?
Visit cybercrime.gov.in (National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal) or call 1930 (Cyber Crime Helpline). You can also visit your nearest police station's cybercrime cell.
Can women file a complaint without revealing their identity?
Yes. Under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act and for sexual offences under Section 164A CrPC, identity protection is available. Complaints can also be filed online at mahilathana.gov.in in many states.
What documents are needed to file a police complaint?
A valid identity proof (Aadhaar, voter ID, passport), and any supporting evidence (photos, screenshots, documents, witness details). Written complaints are not mandatory — oral complaints must also be recorded.
