What to Do in a Road Accident
- 1Step 1 – Ensure safety — Move vehicles to the side if possible. Switch on hazard lights. Set up warning triangles if available.
- 2Step 2 – Call for help — Call 100 (police) and 108 (ambulance) if anyone is injured. Give exact location with landmark.
- 3Step 3 – Document the scene — Photograph the vehicles, damage, position, road conditions and number plates. Do not move vehicles before police arrive if it's a serious accident.
- 4Step 4 – File accident report — An FIR or Motor Vehicle Incident (MVI) report must be filed for any accident involving injury, death or third-party vehicle damage.
- 5Step 5 – Insurance claim — Use the FIR/MVI number for your insurance claim. Most insurers require a police report for major claims.
Traffic Police Services
e-Challan
Traffic challans are now issued electronically. Check and pay at echallan.parivahan.gov.in or Parivahan app.
Challan Dispute
Dispute a challan at the traffic court (court challans) or traffic police headquarters (spot challans).
Vehicle Documents
RC, insurance and PUC can be checked digitally on DigiLocker. Physical copies may still be required in some states.
Drunk Driving
BAC limits: 30mg/100ml blood. Penalties: ₹10,000 fine + 6 months imprisonment for first offence under Motor Vehicles Act 2019.
Know Your Rights with Traffic Police
- Traffic police can only check specific documents: RC, DL, insurance, PUC and Fitness certificate.
- You are NOT required to show your phone or personal items to traffic police.
- You can pay challans digitally — you do not have to pay cash to the officer on the spot.
- If you believe a challan is unjust, do not pay on the spot. Contest it at the appropriate traffic court.
- Record any interaction with traffic police if you feel your rights are being violated — it is legal to record in public.
