What to Do If You Are in Danger

    Immediate danger — Call 112 or 100. Police are obligated to respond to calls from women in distress as a priority.
  2. 2
    Domestic violence — Call 181 or 1091. You can also approach the Protection Officer in your district under the Domestic Violence Act 2005.
  3. 3
    Workplace harassment — File on She-Box (shebox.nic.in) or approach your company's Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) under POSH Act.
  4. 4
    Sexual assault — Go to the nearest government hospital first for medical care. Police should come to you — you do not need to go to the station.
  5. 5
    Stalking / threats — File an NC or FIR (depending on severity) at your local police station under Sections 354D (stalking) and 509 (words to insult modesty) IPC.

Legal Rights of Women

  • 1Right to file a Zero FIR — can be filed at ANY police station regardless of jurisdiction.
  • 2Statement of a sexual assault survivor must be recorded by a female officer at her home (Section 161 CrPC).
  • 3Women cannot be arrested between 6 PM and 6 AM without a female officer present (Section 46 CrPC).
  • 4Right to free legal aid through District Legal Services Authority (DLSA).
  • 5Identity of sexual assault victims is protected — cannot be disclosed in media.
