How to Report a Lost Item

Step 1 – Gather details — Note what was lost, when, where (approximate location), and any identifying details (serial number, registration number, etc.).

Step 2 – Visit nearest station — For lost property, you can file at ANY nearby station — not just the station where the loss occurred.

Step 3 – File an NC report — A Non-Cognizable Report (NC) is filed for lost property. This is different from an FIR. Ask specifically for an 'NC for lost property'.

Step 4 – Get your receipt — You will receive an NC number or GD (General Diary) entry number. This is your proof of report — essential for replacing documents.

Step 5 – Use the NC number — Use this number when applying for duplicate Aadhaar, PAN, passport, driving licence or making an insurance claim.

Identity Documents

Aadhaar card, PAN card, Voter ID, Passport, Driving Licence, Ration card.

Financial Items

Wallet, credit/debit cards, cheque books, cash.

Mobile Phone

Vehicle

Important Tips

Report mobile theft with the IMEI number to help police track and block the device through CEIR portal (ceir.gov.in).
For Aadhaar card loss, you can also lock your biometric on UIDAI's website uidai.gov.in while getting a duplicate.
Passport loss must also be reported to the Passport Office and Ministry of External Affairs (passport.gov.in).
