Which Police Station Has Jurisdiction Over My Area?
The nearest police station is not always the station responsible for your area. In India, police station jurisdiction is determined by official territorial boundaries — not geographic distance. This tool helps you find the station with verified jurisdiction over your locality.
Nearest ≠ Jurisdictional
A police station 500 metres away may not be the station responsible for your address. Jurisdiction is determined by official police district boundaries, not by straight-line or road distance. When reporting a crime or filing an FIR, the jurisdictional station is the correct one — though under Zero FIR provisions (Section 173 BNSS 2023), any police station must accept an FIR regardless of jurisdiction and forward it to the correct station.
Search by Locality or Area

Why isn't my area listed?
Verified jurisdiction data is available for fewer than 5% of police stations in India. No public database comprehensively maps which thana covers which locality — this is the data gap PoliceStationsIndia.com is working to fill from official state police sources.
If your area is not listed: Use our nearest station finder to identify the geographically closest stations, then contact them directly to confirm which has jurisdiction over your specific address.
In an emergency: Do not wait to determine jurisdiction. Call 112 (national emergency) or 100 (police). Any police station must respond to emergencies regardless of territorial jurisdiction.
How Police Station Jurisdiction Works in India
1. Territorial Jurisdiction (थाना क्षेत्र / Thana Kshetra)
Each police station is assigned an official territorial jurisdiction — a geographic area it is responsible for. This includes all localities, roads, villages, and establishments within its boundaries. The jurisdiction is defined by the state police administration and may not align with municipal ward or PIN code boundaries.
2. Police District vs. Civil District
Police districts are administrative units of the police force and do not always match civil/revenue districts. In major cities with a Police Commissionerate, the area is divided into police divisions, subdivisions, circles, and then individual thana jurisdictions — separate from the civil district structure.
3. Zero FIR: Your Right to Approach Any Station
Under Section 173 BNSS 2023 (formerly Section 154 CrPC), any police station must register a Zero FIR for a cognisable offence, even if the offence did not occur within its jurisdiction. The FIR must then be transferred to the jurisdictionally correct station. You are never required to travel to the correct thana first in an emergency or serious incident.
4. Why PIN Codes Don't Determine Jurisdiction
A single PIN code area can span the jurisdiction of two or more police stations. Similarly, one police station can serve areas across multiple PIN codes. The station nearest to a PIN code's post office is not automatically the jurisdictional station for the entire PIN code area.

Help improve jurisdiction data
If you know the official jurisdiction of a police station — from a government source, official police portal, or verified document — you can submit a correction. All submissions are reviewed before being published. We do not publish unverified community data automatically.
